DRI busts major gold smuggling racket in flights

Mangalore, April 22, 2013 : DRI sleuths  have busted a major racket  of smuggling gold in international and domestic flights with the arrest of one person from Kozhikode in Kerala and two others in Mumbai.

One of the  arrested person is Meethala Kallulla Parambath Nazar of Kozhikode, Kerala. He arrived by a Jet Airways flight 9W 531 from Dubai to  Mangalore on April 21, Sunday. 


The arrest followed a tip off. It is learnt, he had hidden five gold biscuits weighing around 500 grams under his seat in the aircraft. It was to be removed by another passenger named Paivalike Ahmed Ali at Mumbai later.


When Nazer divulged this to the DRI sleuths the Air Intelligence unit was alerted and t eh passenger  was intercepted and the gold retrieved.


The arrested have revealed that they had smuggled gold in this manner at least 3 times. DRI officials have registered a case and investigations are in progress.
