Mangaluru, Dec 02, 2021: The Dakshina Kannada unit of Indian Red Cross Society has been adjudged the Best District Branch (for 2019-2020 ) in all round activities for the second consecutive time. The DK unit had similarly bagged Best District Branch Award of Karnataka state last year too (for 2018-2019).
The award was handed over to the office bearers of the district unit by the state Governor Thawarchand Gehlot on the occasion of the Annual General Meeting of the Karnataka State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society held at Glass House, Raj Bhavan, Bangalore on 30th November 2021 at 11.00 a.m. The State Governor is the ex-officio President of the Karnataka State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society.
Chairman of the District unit Shantharam Shetty, Vice Chairman Nithyanand Shetty and Chairman of Disaster management Sub Committee Yathish Baikampady received the award from the governor.
The Dakshina Kannada District Branch of the Indian Red Cross Society was started in 1938. Being the third party custodians of the Blood Bank for the entire district, it delivers 1300 units of blood every month to needy people. Out of this, about 300 units of blood are given free of cost to poor patients. It also provides First Aid Training, Disability Service, Disaster Management Service, organizes Health Camps and motivates the young through Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross. The district Red Cross unit was the first to respond to the crisis situations that followed the outbreak of Dengue and Covid-19 epidemics. It was instrumental in facilitating procurement and distribution of foreign relief materials including medical oxygen during the Covid pandemic. It also distributed over 25,000 free masks to frontline workers and arranged shelter and food worth Rs. 12 lakh to migrant labourers of this region.
Best Performing University Award for Mangalore University Youth Red Cross Wing
During the same occasion, the Youth Red Cross Wing of Mangalore University was given the Best Performing University Award in recognition of Youth Development Activities and support in strengthening Youth Red Cross activities at Mangalore University, Mangalagangotri at all levels for the year 2019-20.
Vice Chancellor Dr P.S Yadapadittaya and Nodal Officer Dr Ganapathi Gowda received the award from the state governor Thawarchand Gehlot.
