Culprits should be punished irrespective of party: CM

Mangalore, Aug 14: Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa said during a press meet organized at Circuit House on Aug 14, Saturday that the government has released funds worth Rs. 200 crore for the Coastal – Malanad tourism development project. He also added that a number of NGOs have expressed willingness to partner with the state government and work for tourism development and that a committee of 10 MPs, MLAs, and others will be formed to discuss various tourism development projects.

A Marine Aquarium Park worth Rs 500 crore will be constructed along the Singapore model in Mangalore in addition to a golf course worth Rs. 300 crore, a link road, and a ropeway from Sulthan Battery to Bengre, he informed. He also said that other proposed projects to attract tourists are the development of Jog Falls and the Thousand Pillars Temple in Moodubidri as well as the Lazer Light Sound programme in Hampi. Upon completion of all these projects, Karnataka will be the number one place for tourism, he declared. 


The CM expressed his gratitude toward Mamatha Banerjee for extending the Mumbai – Dharwad train to Mangalore. He also said that the central government has approved the concretization of Shiradi Ghat at the cost of Rs. 120 crore. The KFDC will complete its work on the Madikeri – Bantwal road next year and the Augumbe Ghat will be constructed as a two-lane road, he said. 


Regarding the problems of water and electricity, he said that a vented dam worth Rs. 45 crore will be constructed as a permanent solution to the city’s water problem. Stating that the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has already utilized the Rs. 100 crore released by the state government for the first phase of the development of Mangalore, the minister said that another Rs. 100 crore will be released for the second phase of development. The state also has plans to purchase 700 watts of energy in a bid to solve power problems. 


In response to a reporter’s query regarding illegal sand mining, the CM said that only Karnataka is exporting its natural resources illegally owing to which it must be completely banned; however the central government is against the ban, he regretted. He said if that the rate of steel will reduce drastically if the central government bans export of iron ore. Expressing his appreciation of the steps taken by Rahul Gandhi to investigate the issue of illegal sand mining, he said that the culprits must be punished irrespective of whether they belong to Congress or BJP. 


The minister also congratulated Dharmasthala Dharmadikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade for being specially invited for the inauguration of the Mysore Dasara.
