Udupi, Jan 23, 2013 : Udupi SP Dr MB Boralingaiah has informed that the investigations into the case of murder of Congress leader and RTI activist Vasudeva Adiga have revealed that a land dispute and personal rivalry had led to the murder. The police are however continuing investigation into the case from different angles, he added.
Speaking to reporters at a press meet here on January 21, Monday, he said so far six persons have been arrested and search is on for the other accused. He also said the police have seized a Scorpio and a Safari vehicle and are on the lookout for Ramesh Bairi and another accused. The court has remanded all the six arrested to a week of police custody.
He said Umesh, Naveen and KS Raghavendra were arrested at Bangalore on January 17 under the leadership of Byndoor CPI Arun Naik, while another kingpin Subrahmanya Udupa was arrested at Kadur on January 18 by Maruthi G Naik, Circle Inspector and his team. Yet another team led by PSI Sampath Kumar arrested Mohan Kumar of Bangalore and advocate Ravichandra on January 19.
The SP said the murder plot was pre-planned and that the conspiracy was hatched at the residence of Subrahmanya Udupa. Six accused had arrived at Vandar on January 7 in Scorpio and Safari vehicles.
They intercepted Adiga’s two-wheeler at around 8.15 pm by hitting against his two-wheeler and this led to a heated altercation between Adiga and the assailants. One of them hits Adiga’s head with a rod.
As Adiga was rendered unconscious they pushed him into a Scorpio vehicle and then strangulated him with while travelling towards Madagere in Kadur of Chikamagalur via Agumbe-Hebri. Later, they tied a 20 kg stone to the body and then disposed the body in Kattekere. But the body was seen floating in the lake after it was separated from the stone and was identified on the basis of a chit found in the pockets, the SP explained.
The SP informed that a property dispute between Ramesh Bairi and Vasudeva Adiga had culminated in the murder and added a personal rivalry led to the murder. He said an impartial probe is also underway to find if there was any other angle to the murder as Adiga was an RTI activist.
The writing ‘Kabbala Amma’ in the black Scorpio which was moving in the area since some time, and which had been noticed by locals, gave the clue as there was a Kabbala Ammana Temple in Ramanagar district of Bangalore. Accordingly, the police team had begun a search in Bangalore, the SP informed.
The SP also announced a cash prize of Rs 10,000 to the police team which helped in busting the mystery behind Adiga case and added even the DGP and IGP would announce awards.
DySP Yashoda S Vantagodi, who led the investigation, Inspectors Maruthi G Naik of Udupi, Arun Naik of Byndoor, Manjunath Kauri of Kundapur, Praveen H Nayak of DCIB, Special squad ASI Mahesh Prasad, Gangolli SI Sampath Kumar and Shankernarayana SI Dejappa were also present at the press meet.
