Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 15, 2025: Construction Workers’ Federation of India (CWFI) will take out a procession and hold a protest in the city on August 18 to urge the State government to allow “environment-friendly” extraction of sand and laterite stone required by the construction sector.

Addressing press persons here on Thursday, Vasantha Achary, general secretary, Dakshina Kannada unit of CWFI, said that the procession will be taken out from Ambedkar Circle to the mini vidhana soudha, and the protest will be held in front of the soudha at 10 a.m.

Construction

Labourers in the district are in dire straits as construction works have come to a standstill due to the stoppage of the extraction of sand and laterite stones, he said.

The chain of labourers and others associated with construction sector are in difficulty without employment.

The CWFI urges government to frame a separate sand policy for the coastal districts to make sand available to people regularly at affordable price, he said.

Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board should release ₹10,000 as monthly relief to such workers who do not have employment now, he said.

Mr. Achary said that though the district administration had enough stock of sand, its distribution procedure has become complex and the sand available is costly.
