Mangaluru, December 24, 2025: Director General of Prisons Alok Kumar said that he has formally visited the Mangaluru prison.
He stated that there are 54 prisons in the state and all of them need to be inspected on a regular basis. Mangaluru is a sensitive prison, and raids have already been conducted there. Prisoners who created disturbances inside the jail have been shifted to other locations, and some more inmates will also be transferred.

Cooperation will be extended to prisoners who maintain good conduct. Discussions are being held with officials regarding how prohibited items are entering prisons.
AI technology is being used on a trial basis, and its effectiveness will be assessed before full implementation. Trials have already been conducted at Parappana Agrahara and Mysuru prisons, and if required, similar trials will be carried out at the Mangaluru prison as well.
He said the issue of mobile jammers has been discussed for the past 15 years. Although there have been changes over time, some problems still persist. A mobile phone was found inside the Mangaluru prison just yesterday. Police will continue to conduct visits in the future.
He added that if prisons are properly controlled, about 60% of law and order issues can be brought under control, as major troublemakers come to prisons and later get released on bail. If they are kept under control while inside, the situation can be effectively managed.
