Mangalore, Jan 26, 2014: The 65th Republic Day was celebrated at a colourful ceremony held at the Nehru Maidan in the city on January 26, Sunday, under the aegis of the District Administration. DK District in-charge Minister and State Forest Minister B Ramanatha Rai hoisted the national tri-colour.
In his Republic Day address, Rai said each and every citizen of the land has to respect the Constitution of India and also be aware of his fundamental rights and duties. It is the responsibility of each one of us to contribute our mite for the development of the society as well as the nation and also to protect and promote unity and harmony, the minister said.
There was a parade by the Police Force, NSS, NCC and Bharat Seva Dal volunteers from various schools and colleges across the city. Cultural programmes were also presented by students of New Delhi Public School, MRPL.
The added attraction of the celebration was a Vintage Car Rally. The yesteryear beauties added charm to the event. An Austin of 1932, Fiat Elegant of 1954, Willys Jeeps and Ford vehicles were the cynosure of all eyes. Vintage bikes and two-wheelers including Lambretta, Royal Enfield Jawa and Yezdi also were part of the rally.
