Mangalore, April 21: The Christian community of Mangalore observed Maundy Thursday on April 21 to celebrate the historic Last Supper, prior to which Jesus washed the feet of his 12 disciples, a day before the Passover.
Christians believe that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet to convey the message of love and brotherhood and to urge people to serve one another and live a life of simplicity and sharing.
In Rosario Church, Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore diocese, conducted the ritual of washing the feet of 12 people chosen at random from Rosario parish and distributed bread to all the devotees. The Holy Mass was then conducted with the bishop as the main celebrant.
In Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, the ritual was performed in a slightly different manner. Instead of 12 elderly men, 12 youth were chosen to be the disciples of Jesus Christ, since this is the International Year of the Youth.
Friday will be observed as Good Friday, the day on which Jesus died for the sins of mankind.
