Mangaluru, August 3, 2025: Emphasizing the urgent need to preserve the cultural heritage of Tulunadu, noted folklorist and former Tulu Sahitya Academy member Dr. Y.N. Shetty called for the systematic documentation of regional traditions like Bhoota worship, Naga worship and Yakshagana. He proposed the establishment of a dedicated “Documentation Unit” under the Tulu Academy for this purpose.
He was speaking at the release of the documentary “Atida Bhootharadhane”, directed by Ramesh Manjeshwar, held at Tulu Bhavana, Urwa Store, on Saturday. The event was organized by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.
Dr. Shetty pointed out that refined Tulu is now found primarily in Paaddanas, nudikattu, madipu, and other oral traditions, which need to be safeguarded. He noted that Bhoota worship, which was once a simple practice, has evolved into a more complex ritual form, and these changes must be recorded and preserved by the Academy, along with materials already documented by individuals and communities.
Subrahmanya Bhat K.J., Gurikara of the Peruvayi Muru Daivam Daivasthana, said the Aati month traditionally marks a period of hardship when agricultural activity pauses. People prayed to Panjurli Daiva during this time for protection and prosperity, he said, highlighting the distinct nature of Daivaradhane rituals held in Peruvayi during Aati.
Dispelling misconceptions, farmer M.K. Kukkaje clarified that Daiva worship during Aati is not prohibited. Historically, economic hardships and lack of resources had limited such practices. With many migrating for work during Aati, worship was temporarily suspended—not due to any religious ban, but due to practical constraints, he explained.
Presiding over the event, Tulu Sahitya Academy president Taranath Gatti Kapikad said the Academy has prioritized documentation to ensure the preservation and transmission of Tulu culture to future generations.
Retired headmaster Narayana Gatti Mali, Daivaradhane performers Anand Naliké, Aithappa Arikkady Kumble and Rajendranath Rai of the Peruvayi Guthu family shared their insights. Director Ramesh Manjeshwar, former Academy president A.C. Bhandari, and member-director Booba Poojary were present. Registrar Poornima welcomed the gathering. The event was compered by Academy member Kumbra Durgaprasad Rai, and Santosh Shetty Hiriyadka proposed the vote of thanks.
