Bengaluru, Nov 01, 2023: The Congress government announced free power and water supply for all government schools in Karnataka on Wednesday, on the occasion of the state formation day.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, speaking at the 68th Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations, said the move was part of initiatives to improve infrastructure at Kannada-medium schools.
In his speech, he opposed the central government’s decision to hold competitive exams only in Hindi and English. “I have urged the central government to hold such exams in Kannada also. If required, I will write to the Centre again,” he said.
There are many living in Karnataka who do not speak Kannada, the chief minister said. “The administrative language is Kannada. Therefore, we should communicate in Kannada itself. Though we should respect all languages, we should use Kannada in Karnataka. All officials should follow this,” he added.
The Supreme Court has ruled that it is parents’ prerogative to have their children taught in a medium of communication of their choice. “However, they should realise that teaching children in their mother tongues is very scientific,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the people of the state. “On this Kannada Rajyotsava, we celebrate the spirit of Karnataka—a cradle of ancient innovation and modern enterprise. Its people, a blend of warmth and wisdom, fuel the state’s relentless march towards greatness. May Karnataka continue to thrive, innovate and inspire,” he wrote on the X platform.
