New Delhi, Feb 1, 2026: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget for a record ninth time, drawing praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said the Budget provides an ambitious push to the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat missions.

Describing the Budget as historic, the Prime Minister said it underlined India’s strong commitment to women’s empowerment. He noted that Ms. Sitharaman, as the first woman to present the Union Budget nine times consecutively, had set a new record.

“This Budget is historic as it highlights India’s commitment to nari shakti, women’s empowerment,” PM Modi said, adding that it reflects the government’s resolve to promote inclusive development.

The Prime Minister said the Union Budget 2026–27 would give new energy and momentum to the ‘Reform Express’ on which the country is riding. He described the Budget as a “highway of immense opportunities” and said the path-breaking reforms announced would open up vast opportunities for the nation’s aspiring and talented youth.

“This Budget gives a strong and ambitious push to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat missions. It realises the vision of trust-based governance and a human-centric economic structure,” he said.

Calling the Budget “unique”, PM Modi said it focuses on reducing the fiscal deficit and controlling inflation, while simultaneously emphasising high capital expenditure and high growth. He added that the Budget would strengthen India’s global role and reflect the aspirations of its 140 crore citizens to move beyond being a fast-growing economy to becoming the world’s third-largest economy in the near future.
