Mangaluru, Feb 2, 2026: High Court judges have directed the immediate closure of Pilikula Zoo after taking note of the pathetic condition of animals at the facility.
Pilikula Nisargadhama, a popular attraction for children and families in Dakshina Kannada, has come under sharp criticism from the High Court due to alleged negligence and irresponsibility on the part of the authorities. Shocked by the mismanagement at the renowned coastal zoo, the High Court judges have instructed that the zoo be shut down immediately.
The situation at Pilikula Zoo has reportedly worsened due to administrative apathy, prompting the court to suggest locking the facility. After viewing photographs of the animals housed at the zoo, the High Court expressed strong displeasure over their miserable condition. “If the animals are in such a state, the park must be closed immediately,” the court warned the government in stern terms.
During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by wildlife conservationist Bhuvan, the bench examined photographs of the animals and voiced serious concern. The court issued strict directions regarding rusted cages, unhygienic surroundings, and the lack of proper safety and care for the animals.
The court also raised doubts over whether Pilikula Zoo is operating without a valid licence, as its licence reportedly expired in December 2025. It was observed that animals are weakening due to lack of proper medical treatment and falling ill after consuming contaminated water.
Despite the Central Zoo Authority issuing a show-cause notice, the management is alleged to have ignored it. The deteriorating condition of one of the coast’s major tourist attractions has triggered serious concern among animal lovers.
