BJP’s call for strike in Kasargod turns violent

Mangalore Today News Network

Kasargod, Apr 1, 2012: The BJP called for a strike in Kasargod on March 31 Saturday condemning a recent incident in which some miscreants pelted stones on the BJP district office in Morarji Bhavan and Karandakkad in Thalipadpu.

However, the BJP organized a procession that turned the strike violent. Participating BJP members shouted slogans and forced business owners to shut down their shops. Stones were also pelted on shops in certain areas, and police had to use tear gas and lathi charge to control the crowds. Several people have been injured in this violence.

Following reports of violence, buses and private vehicles stopped plying on the roads. Cases of assault were also reported. In the morning, BJP activists turned back buses.

The BJP’s protest procession, which started at the office of the BJP from Karandakkad at 10:30 a.m., passed through the traffic junction, the old bus stand, as well as the new bus stand.

Local people could do nothing but watch helplessly when stones were pelted and public property was damaged.
