Mangalore, June 22, 2012: A huge crowd of BJP workers, on June 22, Friday, caused traffic blocks as part of the BJP’s Jail Bharo program against the corruption in the central government.
Under the leadership of MLC Ganesh Karnik and N. Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, BJP workers went in a procession and blocked the road at Mahaveera Circle in Pumpwell.
Another purpose of the protest was to condemn the petrol price hike, hike in prices of essential commodities, and central government’s partiality to Congress-ruled states.
Delivering the protest address on the occasion, Mr. Bhat said that the central government’s irresponsible economic policies have made life very difficult for common people. He alleged that the PM is leading a corrupt government and that Sonia Gandhi is protecting corrupt politicians at the top. He further accused both Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh of encouraging corruption, adding that, in its 8-year regime, the Congress government has broken all records for scams and corruption.
The protestors also stated that prices of essential commodities have risen in spite of the record production of crops in the country.
Mr. Bhat said that about 85 percent of the crude oil imported is actually consumed, although it was only 65 – 70 percent when the NDA was ruling because it focused on alternative sources of energy such as bio-diesel, ethanol, and piped gas.
He said that the BJP has launched a nation-wide protest against the central government, as part of which it will organize road blocks in all its constituencies.
Speaking on the occasion, MLC Ganesh Karnik said that the BJP is organizing a public awareness campaign to save Jammu and Kashmir, from June 23 to July 6.
The Jail Bharo program marked the end of the BJP’s Jan Sangharsh Abhiyan, which began on June 7. As part of this campaign, the BJP had organized protests, public meetings, and street marches all over India.
Meanwhile, the Congress criticized the BJP’s move, calling it a “publicity stunt.”
Speaking to reporters, Ivan D’Souza, secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, commented that BJP leaders have already gone to jail, and now they want BJP workers also to go to jail.
Explaining his comment, Mr. D’Souza said that BJP leaders have already gone to jail on charges of corruption, scams, and other illegal activities and many are on the verge of going to jail. Now they want BJP workers to go to jail on the pretext of protesting against price hikes.
