Angry Residents Say MCCs SWM Project Unworthy of Award

Mangalore Today News Network 2009-11-10 18:30:00

Mangalore, Nov 12: The residents of Vamanjoor, Gundi, and Mandara were the unhappiest people in Mangalore during the recent storms that struck Dakshina Kannada district. The rain water mixed with solid waste material dumped in the Mangalore City Corporation’s (MCC) award-winning Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant flowed onto the roads making them unfit for the use of pedestrians and motorists. To make matters worse, the drainage flowed into the wells making the water unfit for human consumptions. The recent heavy rains therefore made the residents of these areas very angry and unhappy. They have raised their voices in protest against MCC’s SWM plant, which is responsible for their misery.

MCC’s dumping yard creates similar problems every year. During every monsoon, drainage flows into the wells of the region, making the water unfit for drinking purposes. During this time, everybody in the area has to use corporation water for drinking purposes. This adds to their misery because the MCC doesn’t provide continuous water supply to the people. So far, MCC has not kept its promise of providing the required facilities.

Residents are also unhappy about the fact that the dumping yard is poorly maintained. Tall grass and bushes are allowed to grow on either sides of the road making the area dangerous and scary, especially at night. The residents are unable to understand the reasons an award was conferred on MCC for such a poor project. They want to know the exact advantages of MCC’s SWM project because, so far, they have seen nothing but the disadvantages of it.

Today, the local people urged the MCC to clean the roads. They protested vehemently against Bhaskar Moily, the area corporator, and Bharathi and forced them to visit the place. In fact, Corporator Bharathi visited the area for the first time.

Residents also complain that development work is always kept pending owing to the constant squabbles between Bharathi and Bhaskar Moily. Owing to the inefficiency of the MCC in general and the authorities concerned in particular, the people have to suffer. The kids cannot walk on the roads because of the solid waste material and the drainage.

To put it shortly, MCC’s dumping yard and its SWM project, according to the people of Vamanjoor, Gundi, and Mandara, is not worthy of an award. The MCC has failed miserably to take the required action in spite of repeated complaints.

The local people plan to get together with their union and stage a protest against MCC and demand immediate cleaning of the roads and a better alternative to its SWM project.
