Mangalore, Feb 13, 2013: Adyapady near Bajpe in the outskirts of Mangalore, took up cudgels against the Mangalore Airport authorities on February 13, Wednesday, when the latter arrived for survey without any prior notice. It is believed that the survey was aimed at identifying land in the area for acquisition.
According to locals a surveyor, village accountant and horticultural officer had been visiting the area since three months and that on February 13, Wednesday officials arrived for a survey on the grounds that there were trees of a height of more than 7 meters within a radius of 65 meters from the airport.
It is said the airport authorities wanted axing of the trees and even fixed the prices of the trees which however were not acceptable to locals.
The latter even prevented the authorities from conducting any survey. The officials had to finally return empty handed after they failed convince the protestors.
Locals complain that the airport authorities use crackers to chase away birds and animals and the crackers are sometimes thrown into a neighbouring compound. Even an emergency gate constructed near the Adyapady school has been opposed by locals.
