Abduction, rape of minor: 2 from Uttara Kannada get 20 years RI

Mangaluru, June 14, 2023: The Additional Sessions Court of Mangaluru has sentenced two men to 20 years of imprisonment in a case of abducting and raping a minor girl.

The convicts are Sachin Santosh Naik (22) of Ankola and Praveen Jayapal Naik (33) of Hattikere. The victim was at the Mangaluru Central Railway Station on April 12, 2022 at around 12.45 in order to buy a ticket to go to Haryana. The accused on the pretext of helping her get a ticket, made her believe that she can get a ticket to Haryana from Karwar and took her to Karwar were they raped her at Jayapal’s residence and then at a lodge. On April 14, they dropped the girl at the Mangaluru Railway Station.

The Railway Police who noticed the girl, questioned her and she narrated the incident. A case was registered and the accused were subsequently arrested.

They were sentenced to 20 years RI under Column 6 of POCSO Act and imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000. They will have to undergo additional one year imprisonment if they fail to pay the penalty.

The Court has also ordered the Legal Service Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim.
