Beltangady, Nov 9, 2025: The Puttur Assistant Commissioner (AC) Stella Varghese has ordered the release of a house belonging to Zohara, a resident of Patturu in Patrame village, which had been seized by Dharmasthala police in connection with an alleged illegal cattle sale.

According to Beltangady taluk CPM secretary and advocate B.M. Bhat, the police had seized the house after accusing Zohara of selling cattle to individuals transporting them for slaughter. Advocate Bhat challenged the action before the AC court, questioning its legality. After reviewing the case, AC Varghese directed the police to release the house.
The police had registered a case on November 4 against those transporting cattle and later booked Zohara for allegedly selling them. On November 6, they sealed her residence without prior notice, leaving her family, including three children, without shelter.
Advocate Bhat submitted a memorandum to the Beltangady tahsildar and petitioned the Puttur AC, terming the police action unlawful. He said there was no evidence of slaughter at Zohara’s home and that selling cattle is a regular practice among dairy farmers.
Bhat welcomed the AC’s order, stating that justice had been restored and that seizing property without due process was a clear overreach by the police.
