87.72 percent DK kids get vaccinated against polio

Mangalore, Feb 20, 2012 : MLA Abhayachandra Jain inaugurated the polio drive by administering polio drops to a child on Sunday.87.72 percent of children below the age of five in DK were administered polio drops on Sunday. Of the total number of 1,65,136 children in DK, 1,39,519 children were vaccinated against polio during this pulse polio drive, the first immunization program of its kind this year.

Revealing details, Dr. Rukmini M., the district reproduction and child health officer, said that the percentage of children immunized in Puttur was the highest at 96 percent and the percentage in Mangalore was the lowest at 75.74 percent.

Here are the statistics. In Mangalore rural, 26,522 (86.8 percent) were administered pulse polio drops; in Mangalore urban, under the limits of the Primary Health Centre, 15,766 (77.37 percent) kids were immunized; 18,838 (75.74 percent) in MCC limits; 19278 (96 percent) in Puttur urban; 21,773 (95.95 percent) in Belthangady rural; 25,855 (88.71 percent) in Bantwal rural; 3,285 (88.71 percent) in Bantwal urban; and 10,745 (94.34 percent) in Sullia rural.
 
Migrant children hardly turned up for the immunization. On the first day, 8 nomads, 47 kids from brick huts, 58 from construction sites, 53 from high-risk areas, and 219 from other migratory families, were vaccinated.

According to the RCH officer, the rest of the children will be vaccinated during the next three days when the vaccinators and health workers will pay house to house visits. Stating that the department is unhappy over the percentage of children who were vaccinated on the first day, she said that the rest of the children will be covered during the next three days.

3,788 personnel administered polio drops to children in 921 booths all over the district. There were 187 supervisors, 6 mobile units, and 21 transit teams involved in the polio drive. 655 health department staff, 2,102 anganwadi workers, 1045 Asha workers, and 105 medical officers, along with in-charge officers and implementing officers helped carry out the drive.

Udupi
 
In Udupi, 80,307 children below the age of five years were vaccinated, making a percentage of 92 percent in the first phase of the drive on Sunday.

In Udupi taluk, the achievement was 36,711 as against the target of 39,847; in Kundapur, 28,910 children below five were vaccinated against a target of 31,658 children; and in Karkala, 14,686 children were vaccinated against a target of 15,899 children.

637 booths were set up in the district, with 87 of them in urban areas and 550 in rural areas. 2,491 volunteers were involved in the pulse polio drive, which was inaugurated by DC M. T. Reju.
