He also said that 25 percent of the road accidents are caused because of alcohol and drug abuse and that the only way to end this evil is strong willpower on the part of the addict, awareness programmes, and de-addiction centres.
Dr. Jayaprakash K., the head of the Forensic Medicine Department of AJ Hospital, spoke on the different types of drugs, the factors that lead to drug abuse, and ways to check the evil. Speaking of the importance of the role played by students, he said that if a student comes to know that his/her friend is doing drugs, he/she must immediately inform their parents so that a solution could be found at the earliest possible. He said that drug abuse not only destroys the individual, but also the society.
Vinay Gaonkar, the inspector of the Mangalore North Police Station, and Dr. Devaraj, the principal of the SDM College of Business Management, were also present.
When a student asked Inspector Vinay Gaonkar about rules preventing the sale of tobacco and tobacco products in shops near colleges, he said that it is against the law for any shop to sell tobacco and tobacco products within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institution. When the student wanted to know why action is not taken against the shop near her college, the officer passed the buck to the principal of the college, stating that the heads of institutions also have the power to act against them. The principal, on his part, said that he will take action as soon as he gets a complaint.
Later, another student spoke of how the traffic police refused to take action when she complained about a person who was smoking in a public place. When the police office started making vague replies, the principal came to his rescue and said that such incidents can be prevented if many students come together and protest.
