5 top achievers to receive Rachana Awards 2011

Mangalore, Nov 10. 2011: Rachana Awards 2011, instituted by Rachana Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will be conferred on Sr. Maria Goretti, the mother general of SRA, Austria (outstanding woman of the year), Paul Tauro of Madanthyar (agriculturist of the year), Richard Rodrigues (entrepreneur of the year), C. T. J. Gonsalves (professional of the year), and Lawrence D’Souza of Kuwait (entrepreneur of the year). 

A panel of judges such as CA Rudolf Rodrigues, Dr. Meera Aranha, Dr. Ronald Fernandes, Pradeep D’Souza, Casmir Menezes, Roy Castelino, Marjorie Texeira, Austin Peres, Louis J. Pinto, Captain John Prasad Menezes, Ronald Gomes, Joe Coelho, John D’Silva, and Marcel Monteiro selected the award winners. 

The awards will be conferred at a glittering awards ceremony, which will be held in the Milagres Jubilee Hall on Nov 27 Sunday at 6:00 p.m. 

Dr. Christy Fernandez IAS, the secretary to the president of India, New Delhi, will be the chief guest of the event. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore, will preside.

Sr. Maria Goretti 

Sr. Maria Goretti initiated and coordinated the Dharmajyothi Social Centre in Vamanjoor, which has constructed more than 900 houses for the poor. 

She bears to her credit the establishment of the Marie Vianney Home at Honnavar, a sponsorship programme for needy kids, children’s clubs in villages to hunt talents and promote talented children, alternative teaching projects for kids with learning disabilities, nutrition programmes, a study loan sponsorship programme, a youth animation through rural development (YARD) centre in Haliyal, and several computer centres under the National Institute of Continuing Education in Karwar. 

She has also established institutions such as the School of Nursing, College of Nursing, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, and Technical Training Institute for disabled kids in Bidar, and an English medium school and a pre-university college in Shimoga. 

Sr. Gorretti received the Sandesha Award 2000 and the Gratias Agit Award from Czech Republic in 2004.

Paul Tauro

The award is being conferred on Mr. Tauro for his ability to cultivate coconut, arecanut, and rubber on 19 acres of fertile land.

He is a first generation agriculturist, an inspiration and role model to ’farmers to be’ and a wider sections of agricultural community with well planned units of biogas, composite unit, sprinkler irrigation to his farm land.

Richard Rodrigues

Mr. Rodrigues is the managing partner of M/s Karnataka Agencies Mangalore, which was launched in 1976, and has 9 outlets in 4 districts, employing 425 people. 

Karnataka Agencies is known for its effort in upgrading the skills of St. Joseph’s ITI. It runs an annual one-month programme with RUDSETI, an institution sponsored by Dharmasthala. 

 

CA Claud T J  Gonsalves

Mr. Gonsalves is the senior-most CA in Mangalore, who has established the first CA firm in Mangalore.

The award is being conferred on him in recognition of his valuable services, his professional ethics, his support to worthy social causes, his love of music, and his ability to play 9 musical instruments. 

 

Lawrence D’Souza Kuwait

Mr. D’Souza owns over 24 A-grade restaurants around Kuwait, Dubai, Bahrain and other gulf countries including more than 35 very famous confectionary outlets.

About 1,200 workers from helpers to General Managers category in his variety of business companies are mostly from undiveded South Kanara District.

His generous but silent contribution to various philanthropic causesin and around DK and Udupi Districts.
