5 die in omni - gas tanker collision near Nellyadi

Beltangady, April 23, 2011: An omni and a gas tanker collided on NH48 at Periyashanthi near Nellyadi at 1:30 p.m. on April 23, Saturday, killing five on the spot and injuring 6 others. Two of the injured are in a critical condition.

The deceased are Krishnan of Salem, the driver of the tanker; Guruprasad Bhat, the driver of the omni; Bhoja Shetty; Shambhavi Shetty; and Rathi Shetty.

The gas tanker was on its way from Mangalore to Bangalore while the omni was returning from a pilgrimage to Subrahmanya. Of the five deceased, one was the driver of the tanker and four were travelling in the omni. The tanker turned turtle after dashing against the omni, crushing the driver beneath it.

The injured were taken to various hospitals, including AJ Hospital, in Mangalore in 3 ambulances.
