Mangalore, Jan 10, 2012: Dr. Veerendra Heggade, the dharmadhikari of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala, inaugurated the 23rd National Road Safety Week organized in the premises of St. Aloysius Pre-university College on Jan 9 Tuesday. A rally commencing from Nehru Maidan and ending at St. Aloysius College marked the beginning of this event, and a number of students belonging to NSS, NCC, Scouts, and other organizations participated in it.

Delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Heggade said that Indians have a tendency to ignore traffic laws and put their lives at risk. Voicing his opinion that awareness programs on road safety should not be limited to one week, he said that such campaigns must be held throughout the year.

Speaking of the responsibilities of the media in creating awareness on road safety, he said that, which reporting accidents, the media should also explain what caused it, which will help people understand safety issues and the importance of following traffic rules.

Dr. Mugalavalli Keshav Dharani’s research work titled “Road Safety – Problems and Solutions” was released on this occasion.

N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the legislative assembly; Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner; Fr. William Menezes, the PRO of Mangalore Diocese; Rajavarma Ballal, the president of the Bus Owners’ Association; and Mallikarjuna C., the RTO of DK, were also present.
