Mangalore, Dec 14, 2011: City lad Prasad Shetty who won one gold and two bronze medals at the Asian International Power Lifting Championship held at Kobe city in Japan from December 5 to 9 was accorded a hero’s welcome along with his team mates Vijay Kanchan, Neha H., M. Vinutha and coach Sathish Kumar Kudroli.
The triumphant team arrived at Mangalore Central Railway Station from Bangalore at 8:30 a.m. where they were received by the city Mayor Praveen, office bearers of the Balanjaneya Gymnasium, family members and friends. It was a poignant moment for Prasad as his mother and sister welcomed him with managalarathi, flowers and garlands. Hundreds of admirers and well wishers had gathered at the railway station along with a team of the excise department led by Oovappa Gowda.
The team was then taken on a victory procession from the railway station to Balanjaneya Gymnasium in Car Street. From then on Prasad was taken to home, where the proud parents again welcomed their victorious son. Later the team called on the Deputy Commissioner of the district, Channappa Gowda, who congratulated them on their successful performance.
It may be recalled that the weightlifters of Karnataka had won 18 medals for the Indian Team in the same event. Among them many of the medal winners are from Dakshina Kannada. The winners include Neha H. who bagged two bronzes in the sub-junior category and M. Vinutha who got four silver medals in senior category. Both are students of SDM College, Ujire. Vijay Kanchan won three silvers and one bronze in Master I category. Sathish Kumar Kudroli was the coach of the Indian team and lead the delegation to Japan.
Prasad Shetty, who is a student of St. Aloysius Pre University College, had competed in the sub-junior category. He is the son of K. Chandrahas Shetty, a city businessman and his wife Mrs. Shashi Shetty
