Sonia Gandhi memoir row: Penguin India says talks stalled over particular issue, denies pressure

New Delhi, Sep 1, 2026: Penguin Random House India (PRHI) on Monday clarified that its decision not to publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir was not influenced by any external pressure, saying discussions over the book reached an impasse over “a particular issue”.

The publisher declined to disclose details of the issue, citing its agreement with the author and its commitment to confidentiality.

The clarification comes amid a political controversy over the Indian publication of Belonging: A Journey of Love, Sonia Gandhi’s much-anticipated memoir, which is scheduled for worldwide release on November 10 by US-based Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Several Congress leaders have alleged government pressure and expressed concerns over freedom of expression. Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot claimed Penguin India had been pressured to remove passages relating to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS and China’s occupation of Indian territory during the Modi government.

Rejecting such allegations, PRHI spokesperson Pallavi Narayan said the publisher had been keen to bring out the memoir, describing it as a “hard-won acquisition”.

“Since the content of the book is confidential and under embargo, there was no external pressure whatsoever,” the publisher said in its statement to PTI.

PRHI said the manuscript went through its “normal editorial process”, during which several issues were raised and discussed with the author’s representatives. While some proposed changes were accepted and the publisher agreed with the author’s position on others, the two sides ultimately failed to reach an understanding on one particular issue.

The author’s team subsequently informed the publisher that it did not wish to proceed with the publication in India, a decision PRHI said it respected.

“Since we are bound by an agreement, and author confidentiality is paramount to us, we will not divulge details of what led to the impasse,” the publisher said.

Penguin India also defended its editorial process, saying publishers have a responsibility to critically examine manuscripts, raise questions, make recommendations and exercise independent editorial judgement.

The statement reiterated PRHI’s earlier position that it remained willing to publish the memoir and that editorial scrutiny, including fact-checking and recommendations, was part of its standard publishing procedure.

The controversy has intensified in political circles and on social media following reports that PRHI withdrew from publishing the memoir after disagreements over proposed editorial changes. The publishing house has faced criticism from opposition leaders and social media users.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath also questioned whether the publisher’s decision was influenced by external pressure.

The memoir is expected to cover Sonia Gandhi’s childhood in post-war Italy, her marriage into the Nehru-Gandhi family, the assassination of her husband and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, and her subsequent entry into politics.

Belonging: A Journey of Love is scheduled for international release on November 10. PRHI is the Indian subsidiary and operating company of global publishing group Penguin Random House.
