‘Avoid using nuclear energy for destructive purposes’: Dr. Sharad Kale

Mangalore, Dec 12, 2013: St Aloysius College in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai organized a two-day seminar on the topic, "Nuclear Energy for a Better Society” at the Eric Mathias Hall of St Aloysius College on December 12, Thursday.


Padmashree award winner, Dr Sharad Kale, Head, TT and CD at BARC in Mumbai inaugurated the seminar and said that there are misconceptions among the people regarding safety of nuclear reactors, but when it is done in the right purpose, it is more of positive than the negative.

He also said that varieties have come out when nuclear energy is put to positive use. In the field of agriculture groundnuts, pulses and also research is taking place in developing indigenous radiation therapy for cancer treatment. BARC is not just working towards treatment but also in diagnostic purposes.


Dr. Kale highlighted the importance and responsibility of Man in handing over the nature scientifically to next generation and it can be used for the advancement of medicine, agriculture, food security, power generation, hydrology, industry etc.


Delivering the key note address, Dr SF D’Souza, EX AD, BMG, BARC, Mumbai said that the concept of Atomic energy must be clarified in order to put beneficial features into use. The awareness must be created among the youths on the positive effects of nuclear energy, he added.


Rev.Fr. Densil Lobo S J, College Rector said that ‘Nuclear energy is the cheapest of the power and other energies. It can be used for synthesis of new energy and has got a greater role in the case of cancer radiation’.


Fr Sweet D’Silva, Principal of St Aloysius College welcomed the gathering, while Dr Narayan Bhat, Convenor proposed vote of the thanks.


The centre attraction of the programme was the poster exhibition on the various positive uses of nuclear energy displayed on the campus by BARC at the college auditorium.


M Mahant Shetty, Department of Radiation Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. J.R. Bandekar, Head, Radiation Biology & Health Sciences Division, BARC, R.R. Sahaya, Additional Chief Engineer (CFD & FA) in the Directorate of Reactor Safety and Analysis, NPCIL and Dr. T.R. Ganapathi, Scientific Officer (G), Head, Plant Cell Culture Technology Section, BARC participated as the chief speaker.


Over 200 participants from 20 institutions participated in the seminar.
