Medal rush for India at Commonwealth Games: Paul wins historic men’s triple jump gold

Birmingham, Aug 07 2022: In the men’s triple jump, India won the top two medals, courtesy Eldhose Paul (17.03m jump for gold) and Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevid (17.02 jump for silver). Nikhat Zareen has defeated Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland in the women’s Over 48kg-50kg (Light Fly) Boxing final to clinch a gold medal. Meanwhile, Annu Rani and Sandeep Kumar bagged bronze medals for India in the women’s javelin throw and men’s 10km race walk, respectively.


Tripple jump


Meanwhile, Indian shuttler Laskhya Sen has entered the final of badminton men’s singles. Kidambi Srikanth had to face defeat in the badminton men’s singles semi-final. Earlier, boxers Amit Panghal and Nitu Ganghas bagged gold medals for India in the men’s flyweight and women’s minimumweight categories, respectively. PV Sindhu, meanwhile, won her semi-final in straight games to reach the women’s singles final. India also won the bronze medal in women’s hockey after beating New Zealand in a shootout. Pugilists Nikhat Zareen and Sagar Ahlawat will also try to bring gold medals home when they step out to play their final bouts.


India has won four triple jump medals in the past editions but this is the first time two athletes from the country have got podium finishes. Mohinder Singh Gill had won a bronze and a silver in 1970 and 1974 editions while Renjith Maheswary and Arpinder Singh had finished third in 2010 and 2014 editions.


Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand lost in the badminton women’s doubles semi-final and will play for bronze now. India’s Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty have entered badminton men’s doubles final and will play for gold on Sunday.
