New Delhi, Oct 4, 2025: Shubman Gill on Saturday (October 4, 2025) replaced Rohit Sharma as the Indian captain for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Shreyas Iyer has been named as vice-captain for the series.
Gill, 26, now holds a formal role in all three formats as the captain of the Test and ODI teams and the vice-captain of the T20I squad.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s announcement of the Indian squad comes shortly after India thrashed West Indies in the first Test in Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 4, 2025).
The BCCI said Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of the Indian squad for ODIs against Australia.
The upcoming ODI series in Australia will be their first international appearance in more than seven months. After the three ODIs in Australia, their next opportunities to play for India are in the three-ODI home series against South Africa in November-December and against New Zealand in January.
The selectors have rested fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the series and recalled Yashasvi Jaiswal to the squad.
After announcing the squad, Ajit Agarkar said “Rohit Sharma has been communicated about change of captaincy.”
He said “We don’t play too many ODIs and we needed to give the next guy enough time.”
