Birmingham, Aug 08, 2022: India finished 4th on the podium at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with an overall medal tally of 61, including 22 Gold, 16 Silver, and 23 Bronze. The Birmingham Games is India’s fourth-best performance at the CWG in terms of Gold medals won tied with the 2006 Manchester Games.
India’s best-ever showing at the Commonwealth Games came at home in 2010 when the Asian giants won 101 medals, including 38 Gold. In terms of overall medals won, Birmingham 2022 is 5th best showing after New Delhi (101), Manchester 2002 (69), Gold Coast 2018 (66), and Glasgow 2014 (64).
In Birmingham, India finished behind Australia 178 (67 Gold), England 176 (57 Gold), Canada 92 (26 Gold).
Questions were asked about India’s ability to match their previous-best tallies as shooting, which had contributed to 135 medals in the past, was dropped from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. However, India found new heroes to finish among the top 5 in the medal table.
SPORT-WISE SPLIT OF INDIA’S CWG 22 MEDALS
Wrestlers contributed the most to the medal tally of India with all 12 of them returning home with medals. Weightlifters won 10 medals, including 3 Gold medals while Table Tennis stars won 7 medals, including 4 Gold.
Despite the absence of shooting and archery, India shone in athletics, Lawn Bowls, Para Powerlifting apart from sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and badminton where India have traditionally done well.
India won as many as 6 medals in track and field with Eldhose Paul bringing home a historic Gold medal in men’s triple jump while Avinash Sable won India’s first-ever medal in 3000m men’s steeplechase - a Silver.
India women’s fours team scripted history in Lawn Bowls by winning the country’s first-ever Gold.
Sharath Kamal, the 40-year-old table tennis star, emerged as the most successful Indian athlete at Commonwealth Games 2022 with 4 medals, including 3 Gold.
