New Delhi, May 11, 2025: Hours after a fragile ceasefire was violated by Pakistan, triggering reactions from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on drone sightings, China has extended strong support to Pakistan. Beijing’s declaration has raised eyebrows due to its timing amidst heightened tensions in the region.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, of Beijing’s unwavering support during a telephonic conversation. According to a statement released by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Mr. Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence.
The conversation came in the wake of heightened tensions following a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Mr. Dar reportedly briefed the Chinese foreign minister about the regional situation and the recent military exchanges between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated that Mr. Wang appreciated Pakistan’s “restraint” and its “responsible approach under challenging circumstances.”
"China, as Pakistan’s All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partner and iron-clad friend, will continue to stand firmly by Pakistan in upholding its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence," the statement quoted Mr. Wang as saying.
Mr. Dar also engaged with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the unfolding regional developments.
Meanwhile, India issued a strongly worded statement condemning the ceasefire violations. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan,” the statement read. It further emphasized that India’s armed forces are maintaining a strong vigil and have been instructed to respond firmly to any further breaches along the International Border and Line of Control.
The incident underscores escalating tensions in South Asia, with international allies voicing their positions amid the ongoing conflict.
