Kolkata, January 02, 2015: Members of the ruling Trinamool Congress clashed with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party workers in at least three districts of West Bengal over college elections, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad - the student wing of the BJP - claiming the death of one of its members on Friday. At least ten others are reported to be injured.

clash BJPThe BJP claimed its office was ransacked by TMC workers at Burdwan while clashes were also reported from various colleges in Birbhum and Bankura districts as the filing of nomination for the students’ union elections started in West Bengal.

In Birbhum, clashes were reported from colleges in Kharasole, Ilambazar and Bolpur as members of the rival political groups arrived to file their nomination. In Bankura, the ABVP alleged that TMC workers restricted their members from entering a college, resulting in clashes between them. The police had to open lathicharge to control the situation.

This was not the first time that the members of two rival parties have attacked each other in the state, which votes to elect its next government later this year. The BJP, which has been running an aggressive campaign in the state against the Mamata Banerjee government, hopes to emerge as a big player in the forthcoming elections.
