Patna, Sep 28, 2022: At an event in Bihar, schoolgirls made a request for sanitary pads to be made available for free. To this, Harjot Kaur, managing director of Bihar Women Development Corporation, said, “Today, you are asking for sanitary pads, tomorrow you will ask for condoms.”
A video from the event shows the schoolgirls asking for sanitary napkins to be made free so that they don’t have to rely on others for the necessities.
“ The government is giving lots of free stuff. Can they not give us sanitary pads that cost Rs 20-30?” a schoolgirl asked.
IAS officer Harjot Kaur responded, “Is there any end to the demands? Tomorrow, you’ll say the government can give jeans, beautiful shoes. In the end, when it comes to family planning, you’ll want free condoms too.”
“Why do you need to take things from the government?” Harjot Kaur said, adding that “This thinking is wrong.”
When the girls offered a rebuttal that the government promises a lot of things during elections for votes, Harjot Karu said, “Don’t give vote. Ban jao Pakistan (become like Pakistan).”
Harjot Kaur later issued a statement saying, "I am known to be one of the most vociferous champions of women’s rights and empowerment. Some mischievous elements against whom stringent action has been taken by WCDC for omissions and commission of wrong doings, having lost at each forum, have now resorted to such low attempts to malign my reputation."
