UP, Jul 1, 2026: A BJP legislator from Uttar Pradesh has sparked controversy after claiming that those accused of stealing donations from the Ayodhya Ram Temple would suffer from cancer and receive a "death sentence" from God.

Speaking at a party event in Maurawan on Sunday, BJP MLA Anil Singh, who represents the Purwa Assembly constituency in Unnao district, said, "Those who have stolen from Lord Ram’s temple will directly get cancer. It will be a death sentence from God."

Singh said that while the government would take legal action against those responsible, divine justice would be even harsher. "Lord Ram will punish them in such a way that they will die a painful death, and their next seven generations will remember the consequences of stealing from the temple," he said.

His remarks came in the wake of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

On June 13, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a request from the temple trust over allegations of embezzlement of donations.

Based on the SIT’s findings, eight people — Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lav Kush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ram Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava and Ramashankar alias Tinnu Yadav — were arrested in connection with the case.

Opposition parties, however, have alleged that only lower-level individuals have been arrested while the main accused remain at large.

During the same BJP event, Singh also launched an attack on the Samajwadi Party, accusing its leaders of illegally grabbing land, diverting ration meant for the poor, and depriving needy people of their rights.

He further claimed that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is under investigation by the CBI and is now "compelled to invoke the name of Lord Ram."
