Bantwal, Aug 6, 2013 : Villagers staged a novel protest against the deplorable state of the Kuddupadavu-Balashettymoole road, by planting plantain trees on the pothole ridden road. The 8.74 km stretch of road was asphalted in 2009 at a cost of Rs 399.55 lakhs under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
But the road has reverted to its original shape within four years much to the ire of the villagers. The villagers complained that their repeated appeal to the authorities to repair the road, have so far fallen on deaf ears.
As part of the protest they even stage-managed an accident wherein an autorickshaw accidentally lands on one of the water filled puddles on the road and they lifting it with great effort.Even flower plants were planted in the potholes.
The agitators urged the authorities not to settle the bill of the contractor concerned who had resorted to sub-standard work and demanded that the contractor be asked to re-asphalt the road.
They have also warned of severe protest if their demand was not conceded to.
