Udupi, May 11, 2025: In a groundbreaking initiative, the Majoor Gram Panchayat in Kaup taluk, Udupi district, has set an inspiring precedent by allocating ₹10 lakh to the Indian Army from its annual budget. This decision, a first-of-its-kind in the country, underscores the village’s commitment to supporting the nation’s armed forces.

Majoor Gram Panchayat

The Gram Panchayat, which governs the villages of Heruru and Paduru, announced its decision in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In a press release, Panchayat President Prasad Shetty Valaduru and Vice President Manjula Acharya explained that the attack had deeply affected the community. They lauded the Indian Army’s subsequent efforts to counter terrorism and described the allocation as a gesture of solidarity and gratitude for the soldiers’ sacrifices.

Kaup MLA Suresh Shetty praised the initiative, describing it as a historic moment. “This may be the first time in the country that a Gram Panchayat has allocated such a significant amount to the Indian Army. When India undertakes efforts like protecting the nation from external threats, it is the responsibility of every citizen to contribute. I hope this act inspires other village panchayats to follow suit,” he said.

The Majoor Gram Panchayat’s decision reflects a profound sense of patriotism and sets a benchmark for local governance in recognizing and supporting the armed forces.
