Udupi, Oct 2, 2025: Amid the festive crowd during Navaratri celebrations at Ambalpady Temple, two women were caught attempting to steal a gold chain from an elderly woman. The police have arrested both suspects.

The elderly victim grew suspicious of the two women, and upon investigation, the missing gold chain was reportedly recovered.

Chain theft attempt

The incident sparked public outrage, especially among female devotees, some of whom tried to assault the accused. However, local leader Vishnu Shetty intervened and prevented the mob from attacking the women.

When handed over to the police, the accused women claimed they were feeling unwell. Acting quickly, Vishnu Shetty took them in his vehicle to the district hospital for treatment and later handed them over to the police.

Social worker Vishnu Shetty stated, “In cases involving theft or robbery, if the public catches the suspects, they should immediately be handed over to the police. People must remember that if the suspects are assaulted, they can file a counter-complaint. Moreover, if someone is handed over to the police after being assaulted, they must first be sent for medical examination. If injuries are found, those responsible for the assault could be arrested. Therefore, it is always better to follow the law and hand over suspects to the police without taking matters into your own hands.”
