Mangalore, Oct 18, 2012: Addressing the gathering at the Congress workers’ convention held on Nehru Maidan on Oct 18, Thursday, AICC President Sonia Gandhi said that the UPA government had sanctioned Rs. 80,000 crore to the state government during the last 5 years and the BJP-led state government has not revealed details regarding funds utilized for state development.
Stating that Karnataka used to get only Rs. 30,000 when the NDA government was in power, she said that it is essential to know if these funds are really being used for the benefit of the people in the state. She also said that it is up to Congress workers to make the people aware about what the UPA government is doing for the people’s welfare.
Expressing her happiness to see such a huge number of Congress workers, she urged them to prepare for the upcoming elections with spirit and enthusiasm, adding that her colleagues in assembly and the people of Karnataka are fed up of the BJP-led state government and do not want it back. She also added that the BJP is spreading a number of rumors and the public should be made aware of the facts.
Speaking about the importance of focusing on issues such as health, education, and job opportunities, she said that the UPA government is giving 140 barrels of kerosene oil to Karnataka and subsidizing 80% of it, owing to which it has no other option, but to increase the price of diesel and cooking oil. She demanded to know why the state government did not increase the number of subsidized LPG cylinders from 6 to 9 as done by the central government.
Revealing her views on corruption, she said that only the UPA government has fought against corruption, adding that it was the UPA government, which introduced the Right to Information Act. Although the UPA government now wants to introduce the Lokpal Bill, the opposition BJP prevented it from being implemented, she said.
Urging the Congress party to fight against elements of communalism, she wished each and everyone a Happy Dasara.
Mrs. Gandhi received the guard of honor by the members of the Seva Dal. She also administered the oath to Seva Dal members below the age of 15. She felicitated the differently abled Suresh Nayak of Mangalore and Yoga expert Shivarame Gowda of Bijapur for their achievements.
