Twin districts experience tremors after Indonesia quake

Mangalore, April 11, 2012 :Several places in Karnataka, including the twin districts, experienced low-intensity tremors on the afternoon of Wednesday, making terrified people rush out of their houses and apartments.

In Mangalore, tremors were felt in Nalapad Residency on Light House Hill Road and a few other buildings in the vicinity shortly after a massive earthquake of 8.9 magnitude struck waters off Indonesia’s Aceh province, located in its westernmost region.

The people inside the DC’s office felt the vibrations. Tremors were felt at Infosys, Konaje and Mukka.

Tremors were also felt in Sullia, Moodubidri, Manipal, and other parts of the coastal districts, but no damage to life or property has been reported so far.

Tsunami Warning

Indonesia had been alerted of a tsunami after an earthquake of magnitude 8.9 hit the waters off Aceh, its westernmost province.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake has its centre 20 miles or 33kms below the floor of the ocean, around 308 miles or 495km from Banda Aceh.


According to TV reports, as many as 28 countries have been warned of a tsunami.


Indonesia has always been the victim of volcanoes and earthquakes. In Dec 26, 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck the country, leading to a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which claimed the lives of 230,000 people, most of them residents of Aceh.
