Mangalore, Nov. 5, 2012: Tulu Samskrithi Samrakshana and Samvardhana Trust General Secretary Dayanand Adyar informed reporters at a press meet held at Hotel Woodlands today that the trust has been established to protect and promote Tulu culture in the district.
He expressed regrets that interest in traditional sports such as cock fighting and Kambala is on the decline because authorities feel that they foster illegal gambling. Although cock fights form part of annual festivals at temples, police seize vehicles and harass spectators, he said, adding that people are now afraid to show interest in these games, as a result of which they will disappear. Although the trust supports the promotion of traditional sports such as cock fighting, it definitely does not support illegal gambling, he clarified.
Further, he said that the trust will appoint lawyers in each taluk to fight for the promotion of these vanishing sports.
He said that the trust now has around 1,500 registered members, but aims at getting 10,000 members. The lifetime membership fee is Rs. 250, he added.
The trust will use funds collected from donors and sponsors on the development of Tulu language and culture, he said, adding that the trust will implement Tulu language as the district’s commercial language along with Kannada.
Bhaskar Manipal, honorary president; Shashiraj Shetty Kolambe, president; Sylvester Pereira, vice president; and Raviraj Rai, treasurer, were also present at the press conference.
