Mangalore, March 22: Although the summer has set in, there is enough water in the Thumbe dam, Mangalore’s one and only source of water at Thumbe, a fact that has puzzled the city’s hydrologists. In the past, the inflow of water into the Thumbe dam used to stop in February and the river would have begun to dry.
Mangalore City Corporation’s (MCC) engineers say that the dam was receiving 35 cusecs of water daily, which was not the case in the last few years. They say that the Thumbe dam still has 12m of water and that the river is still overflowing into the spill over, making it look full even in summer.
Mr. Linge Gowda, the engineer in-charge of MCC’s water department, said that the monsoons were prolonged this year and that the storage of water was excellent in upstream dams belonging to Gundya Hydro Electric Project and MRPL. He is confident that Mangalore will not face any water shortage this year.
However, citizens are wondering about the effective distribution of this surplus water throughout the city. Mayor Praveen Kumar has assured that the MCC has made arrangements to supply water in tankers to all remote areas having water shortage.
