Mangalore, Sep 16, 2012: A teenage girl died at a private hospital on September 16, Sunday allegedly owing to medical negligence.
Deepika (17), a II PUC student, was admitted to J. S. Hospital in Kotekar at 10:00 p.m. on Friday night because she complained of severe stomach ache and vomiting. Since no doctor was available, a nurse took care of the patient. Although Deepika was given glucose, she blacked out.
Dr. Vijay Kumar examined her at 10:00 a.m. on September 15, Saturday and shortly afterwards, a specialist was called. She was prescribed medication for gastric ailment and she seemed to get better. She also had some fruit.
On Sunday, at around 5:00 a.m., her mother Ravikala who was with her in hospital called home and informed the family that her condition has become serious. Deepika soon breathed her last.
Furious family members and relatives of Deepika arrived at the hospital in large numbers and even vandalized the hospital. They alleged that she died of medical negligence, adding that she had been given 14 injections during the treatment.
A relative has lodged a complaint at the local police station, based on which the police have registered a medical negligence case.
