Mangalore, July 7, 2012: D. H. Shankarmurthy, chairman of the Karnataka state legislative council, inaugurated a one-day seminar titled “Sixty Years of Karnataka Legislative Assembly” organized by the political science department of St. Agnes College on July 7, Saturday.
In his inaugural address, he said that the rapid development witnessed in the country is because of democracy as all development projects are thoroughly discussed and debated in parliament and legislative assemblies. He also expressed his appreciation of the college for hosting this seminar.
Addressing the gathering, MLA U. T. Khader expressed his appreciation of the college for being the only college to organize a seminar in commemoration of the 60th year of the state legislative assembly. He urged students to enter politics to build a strong nation.
The college felicitated prominent women MLAs such as Shakunthala Shetty, former MLA of Puttur, and Mallika Prasad, MLA of Puttur, in appreciation of their political achievements.
Principal Dr. M. Prem D’Souza presided.
Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly, presided over the valedictory ceremony and Siddaramaiah, opposition leader, delivered the valedictory address.
The seminar comprised 3 sessions. MLC Kota Shrinivas Poojary spoke on “Vidhana Sabha – Temple of Democracy” and V. R. Sudarshan spoke on “Outstanding Parliamentarians of Karnataka Vidhana Sabha.” A panel discussion on the topic “People’s Expectations of Vidhana Sabha” was also held, and it was led by Xavier D’Souza, Dr. Dayanada Nak, and Chandranath M., political science professors at St. Agnes College.
