Belthangady, June 13, 2012: An old lady in Belthangady of Dakshina Kannada district, the most senior member of a family comprising hundreds of people, has been allegedly sent out of the house by her own son. She now has no money, no possessions, and no place to live.

Sharada Janardhan, who belongs to the Madapulithaya family, a widely known family in Muchiradka Shishila in Belthangady is the ill-fated leading her life under the tree shades all alone at the age of 82.

She was once the head of the large family, which comprises more than 100 members, but is now an orphan since nobody in the family is willing to take care of her. She sleeps by the roadside and accepts whatever food the villagers give her.

Her husband Janardhan died 12 years back, after which she began living with Radhakrishna, her eldest son, who has now turned her out of the house. When questioned, he says that he has already given his mother her share of the family property and that she has left the house of her own wish.

It is said that he has given only 15000 rupees to her mother out of lakhs of rupees he gained from the family property. Now Sharada is leading her life begging from others for food losing her wealth to her own son.

Radhakrishna is alleged to have put his own mother out of the house because he wanted to grab all the family property. He is also alleged to have encroached on his siblings’ share of the property.

Radhakrishna says that his mother has been abusing him for the past 20 years and that he does not want her to live with them. He says that even his wife and children do not like her. Although he says that he has given his mother her share of the property in the form of cash, his mother Sharada is now living on the streets and receiving food from the people of the locality. All that she has at present are a few clothes and a small handbag. She spends all day either in the shade of a tree or in front of someone’s house.

A number of adults, who are duty-bound to take care of their old parents, are sending them out of the house for monetary gains. It is everybody’s duty to take care of their parents although they feel that they cannot get along with them. Now that his mother is old, Radhakrishna ought to take care of her, especially considering the fact that she needs human concern more than the cash value of her share of the family property.

One hope that Radhakrishna will realize his mistake and take his mother home soon.
