SSLC pass percentages of Udupi, DK plunge

DH News

Mangalore / Udupi, May 6: The SSLC examination pass percentage registered a significant seven per cent drop this year over last year’s record as the results of last month’s exams were announced here on May 5.

DK and Udupi
Udupi, with a pass percentage of 77.3 percent, occupies the 4th place; and DK with its pass percentage of 72.75 percent, occupies the 8th place as per this year’s SSLC exam results. Last year Udupi and DK had occupied positions of 1st place and 4th place, respectively.

Kodagu, with a pass percentage of 75.76 percent, occupies the 7th place. Chikmagalur occupies the 15th place.

22,949 of the 31,543 students, who had answered their SSLC examinations in DK, have passed. In case of Udupi, 12,739 of the 16,479 students who wrote their SSLC exams have passed.

In DK, 40 percent schools have secured 100 percent results, out of which 1 is aided, 2 are government, and 37 are unaided. In Udupi, 12 schools have achieved 100 percent results, out of which 1 is aided, 11 are unaided. No government school has secured 100 percent results in Udupi.

A total of 86 schools in Karnataka have 0 percent results. Two of these schools are government schools and the others are private schools. The lowest pass percentage of 32 percent goes to Bidar.

Three students have secured 619 marks, the highest in Karnataka; but their identities are not yet known.

As compared to last year’s overall pass percentage of 75.77, this year only 68.77 per cent of the 8, 20,778 students who had appeared for the exams passed. The success rate is the lowest in the last four years.  The significant drop in the pass percentage is being attributed to the change in the SSLC question paper pattern, from the predominantly objective type to the descriptive type this year.

However, the highest individual score is impressive. Three candidates scored 619 out of 625 marks. According to the subject wise data provided by the Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board, mathematics and science proved to be the hardest for candidates. The total pass percentages for the two subjects stood at 71.55 per cent and 75.64 per cent.

A total of 566 students failed in maths while the second language also proved tricky for many with as many as 619 students getting zero. First language proved to be the favourite among students with as many as 285 students getting 100 per cent marks. Announcing the results here this evening, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri acknowledged the drop in percentages.

“We are aware that there is a drop in the pass percentage this year as compared to previous years,” the minister said.  Attributing the lower success rate to the shift in the question paper pattern, the minister, however, exuded confidence that “the change will yield a qualitative improvement in students in the long-run.”

Of the total of 8,20,778 candidates who had appeared for the SSLC examinations held last month, 5,21,658 candidates passed. The pass percentage among repeaters and private candidates was also dismal with 21.56 per cent and 7.26 per cent respectively.  The total pass percentage, including that of repeaters and private candidates for the examinations, stood at 63.56 per cent.

While full details of education district-wise and school-wise results would be known Thursday, Chikkodi district recorded the highest pass percentage, bettering its last year’s third position. The district registered a pass percentage of 82.23 per cent.

It was a surprise for State  topper

It did not sink in the very first time her teacher called. An elated Aishwarya,  from Sagar, simply said thanks to him for having called her. “I couldn’t hear him properly the first time, thanks to the bad network. But later, when my headmaster called and congratulated me and said I was among the toppers in the State, I couldn’t believe my ears,” she told Deccan Herald.

Daughter of B S Rajeev, Section Controller at Railways, and Gayathri Rajeev, a homemaker, Aishwarya loves maths and science. A student of Sadvidya School, she has done the city proud by securing 619 marks.

“I went for tuitions, too, but stuck to a rigid time schedule for my studies. My teachers helped me a great deal with repeated tests, especially on new pattern question papers,” she said.

A chocolate lover, Aishwarya and her sister Apurva (sixth std) have bought loads of chocolates to be distributed among her friends on Thursday at school. She wants to be a neurologist in the future.
