Surathkal, May 20: “Mechanical engineering plays a very important role in the conversion of a conceived idea into a product as well as in the economic progress of society,” said Director of Central Manufacturing Technology Institute B. R. Satyan. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 3-day international conference on Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering (FIME) 2010 organized by the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K) on May 20, Tuesday.

Mr. Satyan further explained that all human products have engineering inputs and that, without engineering and mathematical effort, nobody can create even a small thing. Speaking about the financial aspects, he said that a lot of technological effort is required to convert ideas into products and products into money. For this reason, a country that masters technology and mechanical engineering enjoys economic prosperity, he explained and added that developing countries such as India are largely dependent on the West in the mechanical sector. Continuing his speech on technology, he cited the example of pen, saying that the cost of production of the first pen might have been at least Rs 5000 although a pen costs just Rs 10 today. 

Prof Michel Jean Bernand of the Summer University of Switzerland, who was the guest of honour, spoke about the great role played by mechanical engineering in enhancing safety, enjoinment, economic vitality, and quality of life all over the globe. 

Prof. Appukuttan in his introductory address said that the chief aim of FIME 2010 is to create opportunities for delegates to discuss the developments in the fields of design, manufacturing, engineering analyses, thermal engineering, mechatronics, and others to review the various challenges faced by the world. 

Director of NIT-K Dr. Sandeep Sancheti presided over the programme. Prof. G. C. Mohan Kumar, the organizing secretary of FIME 2010 made the welcome speech.
