Mangalore, Nov 12, 2011: The Mangalore City Autorickshaw Drivers’ Association organized a road block protest demanding the immediate repair of all the bad roads in the city, especially the Jyothi to Bunts Hostel road.
The association blocked the roads for 10 minutes before the police intervened. The protestors had expressed their unwillingness to clear the road till the DC visited them and listened to their grievances.
President Ivan D’Souza, delivering a speech from the middle of the road in front of Hotel Woodlands, said that the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is responsible for the pathetic condition of Mangalore roads.
Flaying the MCC, he said that the civic body has been cheating common people from the past two years, as a result of which poor rickshaw drivers need to spend nearly 50 percent of their income repairing vehicles that are being continuously damaged by bad roads.
Demanding to know exactly how the MCC has spent the Rs. 200 crore it has claimed to have received, Mr. D’Souza said that nearly 90 percent of these funds have been misappropriated.
Shekar Deralakatte, the general secretary; Mithun Rai, the member of the Youth Congress; and Praveen Chandra Alva also participated in the protest.
