Mangalore, June 18, 2012: A retention wall forming part of a vented dam that is under construction has collapsed, owing to which over one acre of land in Maravoor, Bajpe has been flooded with water. The flood has destroyed several trees and 3 houses in this area.
Speaking about the tragedy, Oswald, one of the flood victims, said that he has lost several coconut trees when his half-acre plot was flooded. Besides, the flood has partially destroyed his house, he added.
Reportedly, the retention wall collapsed because waste that got stuck at the gate of the vented dam exerted force on it. This happened at somewhere around 4:30 a.m.
Currently, the police and fire fighters are dealing with the situation.
Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner of DK, said that he has instructed the revenue department to assess the damage.
