Mangalore, Sept. 23, 2011: Dr. D. S. Ravindran, the CEO of the Center for eGovernance, told reporters that 225 registration centres will be set up so that citizens can start registering for a unique identification number (UID) under the Aadhar Scheme on September 29.
Revealing further details about Aadhar, he said that this is a scheme that aims at providing UIDs to all the citizens of India. During the registration process, applicants have to provide their fingerprints and photographs and undergo an iris scan. Since DK has a population of 21 lakh, the registration process might take over 2 months, opined the CEO.
UID applicants can submit any of the 17 documents listed for the purpose, some of which are passports, ration cards, PAN cards, voters’ id, ATM cards with photographs, credit cards with photographs, and driving license. Additional details are available at http://uidai.gov.in, he informed. Call centers related to the scheme are also available and citizens with queries can call the national hotline 1-800-180-1947 or the state helpline 080-44554455.
Stating that the documentation of fingerprints and taking iris scans is a complex process, he said that a center can take just 50 cards per day as it takes 6 – 12 minutes to register a number.
He also said that operators undertaking the registration process will have to pass exams and have to be familiar with biometric scanning techniques, adding that only one person can access a computer registering the UIDs. These elaborate measures are taken to prevent fraud, he informed. Since 128-bit encryption technology will be used, the registered documents will be safe from hackers.
He also clarified that Aadhar is an identification number, which will enable citizens to utilize government facilities.
