Rats attack luggage in AC coach of Mumbai – Mangalore train

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 16, 2012 : A train that chugged into Mangalore Railway Station from Mumbai on Jan 15 Sunday appears to have been rat infested.

It may be recalled that furious passengers had blocked a train in Mangalore in protest against the mosquitoes, bedbugs, and cockroaches that infest most trains.

The passengers of the AC 3-tier compartment of the train that arrived into Mangalore from Mumbai discovered as soon as they got down at Mangalore that rats had nibbled at their bags and eaten up fruits, snacks, footwear, clothes, plastic, and even blankets. The 65 passengers of the AC compartment who pay over Rs. 1000 for convenience and comfort were upset about this. Surprisingly, the rats appear to prefer the AC compartments because the passengers in non AC compartments did not encounter any of them.

Rat bite

It is believed that the rats hide in the AC ducts during the day and start exploring the surroundings at nights.

Some of the passengers found that the rats had almost chewed off the handles of their bags. Besides, the luggage kept near the toilets was attacked the most. Two women complained that they had been bitten and took anti-rabies shots in hospitals as soon as they got off the train.

While most of the passengers simply grumbled and walked away, Dr. Jeevan Shetty of Falnir, lodged a written complaint with the station master of Mangalore Junction Railway Station.

One of the passengers remarked that he had never come across such a thing in his life although he had been travelling in trains for the past 15 years.
