Nandalike Pandu, legendary Kambala buffalo, dies at 23

Manipal, Sep 28, 2026: Nandalike Pandu, a 23-year-old buffalo who earned legendary status in the Kambala field, died in the early hours of Monday, September 28, due to age-related health problems.

Pandu had a large fan following and was known for his distinctive running style. He achieved several major victories in the rope category during his Kambala career.

Pandu began his Kambala journey at the house of Karkala Jeevandas Adyanthaya, where he initially competed in the junior rope category. A year later, Atthur Manmath Shetty brought him from Adyanthaya, marking the beginning of his medal-winning career. Pandu won the series-best award in the junior rope category for two consecutive years.

He is believed to have entered the senior category around 2009. As Atthur Manmath Shetty was competing in the junior category at the time, Pandu was taken by Karinje Vinu Vishwanath Shetty the following year. Pandu went on to establish himself as a prominent name in the sport before later moving to the stable of Nandalike Srikanth Bhat, where he had already gained legendary status.

Pandu became particularly popular after racing alongside Kambala legends such as Chenna and Mode. Former renowned Kambala runner Nakre Jayakar Madivala also won several medals with Pandu. Fans fondly remember how Pandu would respond to Madivala’s voice during races.

A legend despite physical challenges

Pandu was known for his remarkable speed, despite not having all the physical characteristics typically associated with a racing buffalo. From birth, the hoof of his front right leg was turned nearly 70 degrees.

He also suffered from elbow dislocation and ankle-joint problems. Despite these physical challenges, his speed remained undiminished, and his performances earned him a special place in the hearts of Kambala fans.

Those who watched Pandu race often said that it was difficult to catch him once he surged forward on the track. His powerful acceleration was one of the highlights of his races.

Around three years ago, Pandu won his last medal at the Hokkadigoli Kambala. He subsequently spent his retired years at Srikanth Bhat’s stable.

Pandu died on Monday morning, bringing to an end the journey of one of the most celebrated buffaloes in the Kambala arena.
